Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan – a city known for talent like Floyd Mayweather and the DeBarge family – Dre Banks has carved out his own legacy in the Midwest rap scene since his debut in 2012. His first project, Kill Yoself Volume 1, made an impactful entrance, featuring notable artists like Jay-Z protégé Amil, Nature of New York’s legendary group The Firm, and Omillo Sparks from Roc-A-Fella’s State Property. Following this release, Dre performed across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, bringing his raw, street-inspired sound to stages packed with fans eager to experience something new and real.
Dre’s journey reflects the trials and triumphs of inner-city life, starting with the allure of the streets and ultimately leading to a personal revelation. Caught up in the system, Dre knew he needed a change. “I had to break it and make the change myself,” he says. With a renewed purpose, he poured his energy into music, releasing Check in 2015. This milestone project not only showcased his evolving artistry but also featured icons like Amil and New York rap legend AZ, co-executive produced by Dre’s longtime friend, Baby Paul aka BpZy of Da Beatminerz fame. This album established Dre’s presence in the industry, drawing listeners with a story that was both personal and universally relatable.
Determined to keep momentum, Dre Banks continued to push boundaries, dropping the street album Coke Iz It in 2018, hosted by DJ Mr. FX, a respected figure in New York’s mixtape scene. Dre’s dedication paid off in 2020 with the single Boyfriend, Girlfriend featuring Trina, which amassed over 1.5 million Spotify streams. Following this success, he released Off the Chain, currently at over 2.5 million streams, and Back in My Life with Grammy-winning songwriter Ne-Yo. With his latest album Checkmate on the way, Dre is poised to take his place among Michigan’s elite, standing shoulder to shoulder with artists like Dej Loaf, Big Sean, Royce da 5'9", and Eminem. Dre Banks is ready to be the future voice of the Midwest, taking his authentic story and impactful sound to audiences everywhere.
